CMU returns to MAC play with weekend series at Eastern Michigan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan pitching surrendered four home runs among 19 hits on Tuesday as the Chippewas dropped a 19-8 nonconference baseball game to Michigan State on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
Â
The Chippewas (9-12) return to Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Eastern Michigan. CMU is 3-6 in league play. The Eagles are 2-7 MAC, 7-17 overall.
Â
"We've got to keep getting better," CMU coach Jake Sabol said. "We're a little thin on the mound right now. We've got some (pitchers) that we like a lot, but we've got to get them better to help us on the weekends; specially with some guys going down, we're going to need all hands on deck.
Â
"We've got some stuff to clean up. We'll learn from it and move on. This weekend's important coming up."
Â
Three of the Spartans' home runs came from Randy Seymour. MSU's 19 runs and 19 hits were season highs for a CMU opponent. MSU improved to 8-15.
Â
The teams are scheduled to play on Tuesday, March 31, in East Lansing.
Â
Chippewa pitching issued 10 walks and the Spartans scored at least one run in eight of their nine turns at the plate.
Â
"Hard to win those kinds of games," Sabol said. "I felt like we were prepared, we answered early offensively, but eventually you just need a few zeros to string together."
Â
Cole Prout hit a three-run homer in the first inning to help the Chippewas to a 4-1 lead. Prout doubled in a run to highlight a three-run CMU third, after which the Chippewas led, 7-5.
Â
Seymour hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot, in the fourth to put the Spartans in front, 8-7, and CMU never regained the lead.
Â
Prout, who tied his season high with four RBI, and Zach Knowlton finished with two hits apiece to lead CMU's eight-hit attack.
Â
Jack Griffiths (1-1), who relieved starter Jake Brown, took the loss.
