KALAMAZOO Mich. – Mackenzie Langan threw her second complete game of the 2026 season, the 14th of her career, struck out 10 Broncos to tie a career high, and the Chippewa bats were following right behind her.
Central Michigan Softball won the first game in the three-game series at Western Michigan, 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon. CMU moves to 16-15 overall and 7-5 in MAC play while the Broncos shift to 18-17 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
Langan set the tone in the bottom of the first inning, striking out the side, two of which were strikeouts looking. The senior tallied five of her 10 strikeouts as backwards K's in the scorebook.
CMU scored first in the outing, plating a run in the top of the third inning. Alexa Carter drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Ella Luegge pinch ran for her at first base. Luegge stole second base and was moved to third by a ball put in play by Tori Briggs.
Luegge crossed the plate when Angela Petrovitch reached via error by the Bronco third baseman.
CMU left runners in scoring position in the fourth, and sixth innings, but tallied five in the top of the seventh.
Rachel Cairo started the inning with a single to left field, followed by a single down the left field line by Alexa Carter. Cierra Laska then reached via bunt to load the bases with nobody out. Tori Briggs then singled to the first baseman on a ground ball to score Cario, 2-0 CMU.
Western Michigan was forced to make a pitching change bringing in a new pitcher with bases loaded, still nobody out. The first out of the inning came at home when Carter was thrown out on a ball put in play to the infield.
Emma Lotus then drew a walk to scored Laska and move the lead to 3-0 in favor of the Chippewas. London Williams collected an RBI on a groundout to the shortstop that scored Briggs, and Jenna Kuzara scored the final two runs with her second hit of the game scoring Lotus and Petrovitch.
Western Michigan hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Chippewas' lead in half, but Langan then struck the final two batters out to end the game.
Kuzara and Grace Koenig each tallied two hits in the game, Kuzara led with two RBI.
The two teams will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon for a double header at 1 p.m. at Ebert Field.
