KALAMAZOO Mich. – The bats were hot, and there was no cooling them down, they just got hotter as the day went on for Team 48 at Western Michigan on Wednesday.
Central Michigan won the first game 4-3 and then the second game 14-0 in five innings. With the back-to-back victories, CMU moves to 18-15 on the season and 9-5 in conference play while the Broncos shift to 18-19 overall and 7-8 in the MAC.
The Chippewa pitching staff threw three complete games in the series totaling 19 strikeouts.
Between the two games played Wednesday afternoon, Tori Briggs, Angela Petrovitch, Emma Lotus and London Williams each tallied four hits apiece.
Next up, Central Michigan hosts UMass on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and then the series finale on Sunday at noon.
Game 1
In the first game, the Chippewas came out of the gate ready to score. Angela Petrovitch singled through the right side and moved into scoring position on a throwing error by the Bronco catcher. London Williams then drove Petrovitch home on a single to left field.
Inning two brought another run for the Chippewas as an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Emma Lotus scored Alexa Carter, who charted an infield single to the shortstop. In the top of the fifth, CMU scored on a sacrifice fly from Jenna Kuzara and posted its fourth run in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Carter. Game 2
Central Michigan entered Tuesday's second game searching for a series sweep over its in-state rival, and boy did it come as the Chippewas rallied for 17 hits, scored 14 runs and ended the rout in five innings.
Right from the start, CMU came out ready to score as it went up 5-0 in the first inning. Angela Petrovitch opened the game with a single, then scored on an RBI single from Emma Lotus. Lotus advanced to third on her ball in play as the Broncos threw the ball around a bit, and Lotus then scored when London Williams bunted for a hit, allowing her to cross the plate. Jenna Kuzara then tripled, Williams scored, and Kuzara scored on the first pitch of the next at-bat on a wild pitch. Rachel Cairo charted a sacrifice fly to score Alexa Carter, who walked, and CMU led 5-0 after the top of the first.
Central Michigan plated another run in the top of the second when Williams scored on a throwing error by the WMU catcher to make it 6-0.
In the third, CMU scored six more runs. The scoring started with a two-RBI single for Cierra Laska, which then chased the second Bronco pitcher out of the game. Western Michigan's starting pitcher was pulled in the top of the first inning after CMU scored the first four runs. A double from Williams scored two more runs, Laska and Cairo and CMU led 10-0. Jenna Kuzara hit her sixth home run of the year after the double from Williams to give Central Michigan a 12-0 advantage.
CMU plated another run in the fourth with a line-shot home run from Rachel Cairo.
Mackenzie Langan, who took the start for CMU for the second time in three games, worked a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth with three fly outs and sent her offense back to the plate in the fifth.
CMU's final run came via an RBI double from Paige Sayler. The double marked the first hit of Sayler's four year career as a Chippewa.
The game ended with a quick inning for Langan with two strikeouts and a groundout with a walk in between.
This is the fifth time the Chippewas have swept the Broncos under coach McCall Salmon. The two teams have met six times in her seven years at the helm of the program. In those six series, the Chippewas have outscored Western Michigan 98-25.
