DJ Mocini is in his seventh season on coach Keno Davis’ Central Michigan men’s basketball staff.
He was promoted to an assistant-coaching position in August, 2019, after serving as the Chippewas’ director of operations for the previous six seasons.
In 2019-20, Mocini was part of a staff that led a Chippewa squad that averaged 78.3 points per game, ranking first in the MAC and 21st nationally. CMU posted back-to-back 100-point games – 134 in their season opener and then 102 in their second game of the season – marking the first time a CMU men’s basketball team has scored in triple digits in consecutive games since the 1972-73 season.
The 134 points, which came against Mississippi Valley State, is a program record.
Among the 2019-20 program highlights was senior David DiLeo becoming the Mid-American Conference career leader in 3-pointers with 337 and the Chippewas extending their series win streak over archrival Western Michigan to six games.
A native of Saugatuck, Mich., Mocini joined the CMU staff in 2013 after serving as an assistant coach at Northwood for the previous three years. He helped the Timberwolves in 2012 capture the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division championship, setting a school record for NCAA Division II wins and consecutive victories.
Mocini graduated from Albion College in 2008 from the Carl A. Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management. He played four years for the Brits basketball team, serving as team captain his senior season.
Mocini completed his master's degree in educational leadership at Dayton in 2012. He served as a graduate assistant for the men's basketball program that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009. In 2010, the Flyers won the NIT championship.
