Kyle Gerdeman has been instrumental in Central Michigan`s success on and off the court during his six years with the program, establishing strong recruiting ties within the state of Michigan and across the country particularly employing his experience at the junior-college level in building the Chippewa roster.
Gerdeman's principle responsibilities include academics and scheduling. On the court, his primary focus is CMU’s offense. He also oversees the statistical analysis of the team, identifying trends and tendencies and then implementing those results on the court.
In 2018-19, the Chippewas return three of their top four scorers – Shawn Roundtree Jr., David DiLeo and Kevin McKay -- from the previous season. DiLeo ranked 10th in the Mid-American Conference at 6.6 rebounds per game a year ago, when Gerdeman’s top on-court priority was rebounding.
Â
Gerdeman’s recruiting efforts helped CMU land a strong incoming class for the 2018-19 season. That class includes big men Rob Montgomery, Romelo Burrell and Kevin Hamlet along with guards P.J. Mitchell, Larry Austin Jr. and Dallas Morgan. That group follows strong recent classes that have included the likes of Roundtree, McKay and DiLeo.
Under Gerdeman's tutelage, 2016 graduate John Simons became the first player in program history to lead his team in rebounding in four consecutive years. Simons ranks sixth in program history with 776 boards.
In Gerdeman's tenure at CMU under Keno Davis, the program has made major strides in the area of academics. Fifteen times since Davis took over the program has a Chippewa earned Academic All-MAC honors and from 2014-16 the Chippewas placed more student-athletes on the honor squad than any other institution.
In 2016, six CMU student-athletes were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, and one year prior CMU was one of 19 NCAA Division I programs to earn the Team Academic Excellence Award from the NABC.Â
Prior to coming to CMU, Gerdeman served as an assistant for three years at Southeast Missouri State, and prior to that was the head coach at Moberly Area (Mo.) Community College for three years.
Gerdeman assembled recruiting classes at Southeast Missouri State that helped the Redhawks more than double their win total in his three seasons on the staff. He helped develop Leon Powell, the nation's leader in field goal percentage in 2010-11.
Gerdeman, a Wright City, Mo. Native, also spent a combined nine seasons serving as an assistant coach at Mineral (Mo.) Area College, at Moberly, and at East Central College (Mo.).
During his time in the junior college ranks Gerdeman helped recruit and develop 23 players who went on to play at the NCAA Division I level, including 2005 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Year Eddie Smith.
He also mentored five NJCAA All-Americans, was part of three Region XVI championship teams, and assisted Moberly to a fifth-place finish in the 2002 NJCAA National Tournament.
Gerdeman holds a master's degree in education from Central Methodist University. He and his wife, Angie, have three children, Alyssa, Karson and Harper.
