Detroit native Raymoan McAfee, a former Ferris State assistant and player, enters his second year on Andy Bronkema’s at Central Michigan men’s basketball staff. He was elevated to Associate Head Coach on April 23, 2026.
“Coach McAfee has proven himself in every step of his coaching career,” Bronkema said. “His experience and growth put him on par with any assistant coach in the nation. He does things the right way and puts people first, making it an easy promotion from within. Raymoan played for me while I was an assistant and head coach, he volunteered, and was my top assistant so there is a long history of relationship and trust. A Detroit native, he joined us from Wayne State, where he continued to grow as a coach. Raymoan’s intensity and detailed thought process are things I’ve grown to appreciate about him. Doing life together with like-minded, talented people is a priority for me, and having Coach Moan on board is comforting for me.”
“My family and I are fired up to be in the Central Michigan and Mount Pleasant community,” McAfee said. “I’m excited to reunite with Coach Bronks and the rest of the staff. Coach has an incredible vision, and I believe in his process to bring championships to CMU.”
He joined the Chippewas in April 2025 after three years at Wayne State as an assistant coach under head coach Bryan Smothers. During his tenure (2022-25), he contributed a 37-46 overall record, while 14 of his players earned Academic All-GLIAC honors. In 2024-25, Wayne State secured its first winning season since 2017-18, finishing 15-14 overall and 11-9 in the GLIAC.
Prior to Wayne State, McAfee spent four years coaching at Ferris State with Bronkema. He played at Ferris State (2012-14), coached for three years, then returned in 2018 as the lead assistant. In October 2021, he became associate head coach, overseeing operations, recruiting, skill development, on-floor coaching, video, analytics, and more.
During two stints at Ferris State, McAfee helped the Bulldogs win three consecutive GLIAC Tournament titles (2015-17) and GLIAC regular-season titles in 2016-17 and 2019-20, elevating the program to top conference status.
McAfee launched his coaching career as lead assistant at Indiana Tech under Ted Albert in 2017-18, helping to guide the Warriors to a 27-7 record, 17-3 slate in conference play, and an NAIA Division II Tournament second round appearance. The Warriors finished as WHAC runner-up and reached a No. 3 ranking in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ poll.
A Detroit Pershing High School standout under coach A.W. Canada, McAfee was part of the 2009 state championship team and played key roles in back-to-back city titles in both 2009 and 2010. In the 2010 city championship final, he posted a triple-double versus Cody. In Pershing’s 90-73 state title win over Kalamazoo Central in 2009, he added five points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
McAfee began his college career at Bethune-Cookman, playing 49 games over two seasons, then transferred to Ferris State in 2012, and became a regular starter. In two Bulldog seasons, he played in 45 games with 53 blocked shots, ranking third in the GLIAC with 37 blocks as a senior.
McAfee graduated from Ferris State in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Applied Speech Communication and earned a master’s in Educational Leadership in 2022. He belonged to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
McAfee lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Domonique, and son, Rayden.
