Shane Heirman joined the Central Michigan men’s basketball coaching staff in May, 2021 and serves as the associate head coach under Tony Barbee.
Prior to joining Barbee’s staff, Heirman spent four seasons as an assistant coach at DePaul, where he helped lead the Blue Demons to a combined 35 victories in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, the best two-year run by the program in 15 years.
He also helped the Blue Demons to BIG EAST Tournament wins in back-to-back seasons (2020 and 2021) for the first time in program history.
In 2019, Heirman helped DePaul reach the title game of the College Basketball Invitational in the program’s first postseason appearance since 2007. The Blue Demons opened the ’18-19 season 12-1, marking their best nonconference record since 1991.
Prior to his arrival at DePaul, Heirman served for three seasons as the coach La Lumiere School in LaPorte, Ind. At La Lumiere, he coached 25 players who went on to play NCAA Division I basketball including three McDonald's All-Americans while amassing an impressive 82-7 record, two national championship game appearances, and the Geico High School National Championship in 2017.
Heirman served as the Jordan Brand All-American game coach, was named the Flo Hoops National Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the James Naismith Coach of the Year Award.
Heirman has recruited and developed several players who have gone on to NBA careers including Jaren Jackson of the Memphis Grizzlies, Jordan Poole (Golden State Warriors), Max Strus (Miami Heat), Paul Reed (Philadelphia 76ers), Isaac Humphries (Atlanta Hawks), Javon Freeman-Liberty (Chicago Bulls), Jeremiah Tilmon (Orlando Magic), Brian Bowen (Indiana Pacers), Kevin Zhang (Phoenix Suns), and Romeo Weems (Memphis Grizzlies).
Heirman is a Chicago-area native who played at Tulsa from 2008-11, helping the Golden Hurricane to back-to-back Conference USA Tournament championship game appearances in 2008 and 2009, the College Basketball Invitational title in 2008, and NIT at-large bids in 2009 and 2010.
Heirman holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulsa and is pursuing a master’s in business administration from Central Michigan. He and his wife, Claire, have a daughter, Kennison James.
