MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.--The Central Michigan women's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the year with a 69-49 loss to Binghamton in the consolation game of the Sheraton Four Points Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The first half was a see-saw battle that saw seven ties and eight lead changes. Binghamton built a five-point lead (21-16) midway through the half but the Chippewas cut the lead to one with layups by Vershaun Jones (Detroit/Jr.) and Mandy Elwer (Delphos, Ohio/Fr.).
The Bearcats jumped to a 28-20 lead late in the first half but CMU went on an 8-0 run of its own to take a 31-30 advantage with 15 seconds to go in the half. Redshirt freshman Beth Kindel (Clare) came off the bench to score two baskets and a pair of free throws during Central's run.
CMU's lead didn't last long as the Bearcats hit the final shot of the half to retake the lead at 32-31.
The Chippewas came out and scored the first points of the second half on three Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) free throws to tie the score at 34-34 with 16:55 to go in the game.
Central couldn't sustain the momentum and Binghamton quickly took control. The Bearcats went on an 8-0 run to jump to a 47-36 lead at the 10:03 mark.
Binghamton followed that run up with a 10-0 spurt to extend the lead to 63-43 in the late stages of the half.
The Chippewa offense couldn't get untracked in the second half. CMU shot .138 (4-29) in the second half while Binghamton shot .517 (15-29). Central shot .258 (16-52) for the game.
Kindel led the Chippewas with 16 points and eight rebounds while Rozak had 11 points and four assists.
Binghamton was led by Bess Greenberg who had a game-high 21 points and Sarah Cartmill who added 18 points.
The Chippewas return to action this weekend at the Dead River Company Classic at Maine. CMU takes on host Maine in a semifinal game on Friday at 7 p.m. The consolation and championship games are set for Saturday.
