Women's Basketball Falls To Maine

ORONO, Maine--The Central Michigan women's basketball team dropped a 78-65 decision to host Maine in its opening game in the Dead River Company Classic on Friday night at Alfond Arena.
After six ties in the opening eight minutes of the game, the Black Bears took a 21-17 lead on a three-pointer by Tracy Guerrette.
The Chippewas came back to take a 22-21 lead on a layup by Vershaun Jones (Detroit/Jr.). CMU built its lead to six points (27-21) with 6:58 to play and went into the half with a 34-30 advantage.
Central continued its dominance in the second half, outscoring Maine 14-4 in the early stages of the second half to jump to a 49-37 lead.
Maine answered with a 12-3 run to cut the CMU lead to 53-52 with 8:44 to go.
The Black Bears cut the Chippewas' lead to a point two more times before a layup by Anna James gave them a 56-55 lead at the 6:56 mark.
CMU tied the score at 56-56 at 5:18 but it was all Maine down the stretch. The Black Bears reeled off 10 unanswered points to take a 66-56 lead.
Central would get as close as seven points but Maine outscored CMU 8-2 in the final minute to secure the victory.
Christy Glover led the Black Bears with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Ellen Geraghty had 13.
The Chippewas play in the consolation game of the Dead River Company Classic on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
