Women's Basketball Falls To Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill.--The Central Michigan women's basketball team dropped a 72-55 decision to Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Evans Field House.
The loss drops CMU's record to 3-16 overall and 0-8 in the Mid-American Conference while Northern Illinois improves to 9-11 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
The Chippewas trailed by only five points at the half but the Huskies went on a 9-0 run early in the second half to take a 13-point lead.
Northern Illinois built its lead to as many as 15 points in the second half before the Chippewas scored six unanswered points late in the game to cut the Huskie lead to 55-48 with 3:59 to play.
NIU quickly built its lead back to double figures and hit four free throws in the last 1:05 of play to secure the victory.
Key to the Huskies' success in the second half was their strong shooting. NIU shot 70 percent (16-23) from the floor in the second stanza and 82 percent (9-11) from the charity stripe. NIU outshot CMU, 63 percent to 30 percent for the game.
NIU scored the first six points of the game before the Chippewas got on the board with a bucket from Molli Munz.
The Huskies extended their first-half lead to 12 points before the Chippewas went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 22-14 with 9:23 to go.
Northern Illinois built its lead to 10 points late in the game but CMU answered by scoring the final five points of the half to make it 30-25 at the break.
Munz led the Chippewas with a game-high 17 points. She shot 7-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-9 from the three-point line.
Vershaun Jones had 11 points and seven rebounds and Beth Kindel added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Northern Illinois had four players score in twin figures. Jennifer Youngblood and Kristan Knake each had 16 points while Michelle Johnson had 14 and Kim Boeding added 11.
CMU is off until playing at Western Michigan on Feb. 3.
