LOUISVILLE, KY. -- The Central Michigan University field hockey team (5-7, 2-4 Mid-American Conference) lost a close match with the Louisville Cardinals on Friday after gaining a 2-0 advantage in the first half. Louisville is ranked No. 9 nationally.
Melissa Lazarevski (Rochester, N.Y./Sr.) notched her team-leading fifth goal just two minutes into the game to give the Chippewas the early lead. Lazarevski increased the lead to 2-0 with her second goal of the game at the 9:20 mark.
But, with 10 minutes remaining in the first half Louisville's Elisa Eshelman buried a ball in the back of the net to cut the Chippewa lead to one. Louisville tied that game at 2-2 with a goal by Danielle Barr at the 45:13 mark. Louisville didn't waste any more time, scoring the game-winning goal just 40 seconds later to put the Chippewas away.
Goalkeeper Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Jr.) made nine saves and allowed three goals in recording her seventh loss of the season.
The Chippewas return to action Saturday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Oxford, Ohio, to face the Miami Redhawks at 5:30 p.m.
