MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan wrestling team (0-1 overall, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) fell short in its attempt knock off intrastate rival Michigan State by falling 18-16.
Starting at the 133-pound weight class, CMU took the early lead after two matches, 7-0. MSU posted two straight wins and took the 9-7 lead. MSU gained six critical points at 157 when Gray Maynard pinned David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Fr.) at 3:59.
The match was back and forth throughout with MSU holding a 15-13 advantage heading into the final two matches. Heavyweight Jack Leffler (Morris, Ill./Sr.) won in sudden victory, 2-1, to give the Chippewas a one-point lead heading into the final match. Central was unable to hold onto that lead with MSU's returning All-American Chris Williams picking up the victory at 125-pounds over Jason Borrelli (Mount Pleasant/Fr.), 5-2. It gave Michigan State the victory, 18-16.
The Chippewas return to action this Saturday, Dec. 1, when they travel to The Citadel to participate in a multi-team tournament. The tournament is set to start at 9 a.m., and last all day.
