Field Hockey Opens Season With 2-1 Victory

EVANSTON, ILL. -- The Central Michigan University field hockey team (1-0 overall) started the season with a 2-1 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats this afternoon in Evanston, Ill.
The Wildcats got on the board first with a goal from Nicole Smith with 11:26 remaining in the first half. The Chippewas knotted the game at 1-1 on a Melissa Lazarevski (Rochester, N.Y./Sr.) goal with only 2:06 remaining in the first half.
The Chippewas then took the lead when Krystal Yee (Victoria, B.C/So.) scored with 27:49 remaining in the second half, which proved to be the game-winner. Meg Lewis (Pittsford, N.Y./Jr.) was credited with an assist on Yee's goal.
Goalkeeper Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Jr.) made four saves and allowed only one goal in recording the win.
The Chippewas return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 26, when they take on Southwest Missouri State in Evanston, Ill., at 1p.m. (CDT).
