DeKALB, Ill. -- The Central Michigan University women's basketball team erased a nine-point halftime deficit and took a two-point second half lead but couldn't hold on in a 74-61 Mid-American Conference (MAC) loss here Monday night.
CMU trailed, 34-25, at the half but rallied to take a 42-40 lead with 13:47 to play on an 18-footer by Desiree Eidson. However, a couple of Chippewa turnovers opened the door for the Huskies to pull away for the win.
The loss was CMU's seventh straight and dropped its record to 9-11 for the season and 1-8 in MAC action.
"We got off to a great start in the second half and battled our way back into it," said first-year Central coach Eileen Kleinfelter. "However, we made a couple of silly turnovers and that turned the game around.
"We were in it until the final five minutes but we failed to execute at the end."
Eidson led the Chippewas with 18 points followed by Kendra Martin with 14 and Molli Munz 10. Jennifer Youngblood led the Huskies with 16. Lindsay Secrest bagged 11-of-12 free throws, all in the second half, and finished with 15 for NIU.
NIU shot 50 percent from the field to CMU's 42.6 percent. Central turned the ball over 18 times to 13 for Northern.
CMU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, with a home game against Western Michigan at 7 p.m.
