MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University opened the home portion of the Mid-American Conference season with convincing 80-68 win over the University of Akron.
The Chippewas are now 7-6 for the season, 1-1 in MAC action, while the visiting Zips fall to 1-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
After a nick-and-tuck first half that saw CMU hold a slim 29-27 edge at the break, CMU posted 51 points in the second half to pull away.
Akron held its final lead of the game at 54-53 with 9:38 to go. The Chippewas then went on an-eight point run to go ahead, 61-54, with 6:43 to play.
Freshman guard Casey Manning led the Chippewas with a career-high 19 points, 13 coming in the second half. She also had six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Senior Desiree Eidson chipped in with 16 points for CMU while freshman Lindsay Mecoli bagged 11. Sophomore Lindy Hatfield tallied a career-high 11 rebounds in addition to scoring nine points, and redshirt frosh Tiffany Douglas netted a career-high with eight points.
The 80 points were CMU's second-highest tally of the year, the first being 88 in the season-opening win over Siena Heights, 88-42.
Akron lost the game despite shooting 59.1 percent from the field, nailing 26-of-44 attempts. Cassandra Martin and Lindsay Hemmelgarn each tallied 19 points for the Zips. Hemmelgarn hit five-of-10 three-pointers.
A 36-20 edge in rebounding by the Chippewas was a big difference.
CMU returns to action on Wednesday, January 15, when it entertains Ball State University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
