MOUNT PLEASANT - Deadly shooting from behind the three-point line propelled Ball State University to a 78-70 Mid-American Conference win over Central Michigan University in women's basketball here Wednesday night.
The Cardinals nailed 11-of-18 treys to raise their record to 9-4 for the season, 3-0 in MAC action while CMU drops to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in loop play.
The host Chippewas led by as many as 10 points in the first half at 22-12 with 9:18 to go before BSU found its shooting eye and roared back to claim a 30-29 lead at intermission.
Although CMU stayed within eight points the entire second half, it managed just one lead at 56-55 with 8:20 to go on a layup by freshman Erin Kuhl. The game was tied for the final time at 61-61 with 7:20 left when Ball State's Kate Endress drilled a three-pointer to put the Cardinals ahead for good, 64-61.
The one-two punch of Johna Goff (25 points) and Endress (23) proved too much for the Chippewas. Goff drilled five-of-six shots from behind the arc and Endress four-of-six. BSU shot 58.3 percent for the game on 28-of-48.
The homecourt was not as kind to CMU. The Chippewas hit just 35.1 percent from the field on 27-of-77, meshing 10-of-31 from three-point land for 32.3 percent.
Senior Desiree Eidson and Kuhl had 18 points each for CMU while freshman Lindsay Mecoli added 11.
Ball State held a 43-33 edge in rebounds behind Jessica Reiter's 10 caroms. Edison matched her with 10 for CMU.
The Cardinals had 25 turnovers, 13 of them on steals by CMU. Hatfield and Kuhl had four each. The Chippewas turned it over only 10 times.
CMU is at Bowling Green this Saturday, January 18, for a MAC game at 1 p.m. The Chippewas then play host to rival Western Michigan on Monday, January 20, at 7 p.m.
