Wrestling Falls To Two Top-Five Opponents

ANN ARBOR --The Central Michigan University wrestling team (0-2 overall) battled hard Sunday afternoon, but the shorthanded squad fell to No. 2 Lehigh, 25-9, and No. 4 Michigan, 27-16, in Ann Arbor.
CMU took on the Wolverines of Michigan in its first dual of the day. The Chippewas gave the fourth-ranked Wolverines all they could handle but two first-period falls propelled Michigan to victory, 27-16.
The dual opened with a matchup between two ranked wrestlers, CMU's No. 19-ranked Kyle Stoffer UM's Mark Moos, ranked eighth. Moos took an early lead with a four-point second period and held off a late charge by Stoffer for a 6-4 victory. CMU got on the board at 133 as Jordan Webster, ranked seventh, dominated Chase Metcalf, scoring a technical fall, 15-0. At 141, fourth-ranked Jason Mester took on ninth-ranked Clark Forward. Forward took the early lead with a takedown in the first period, but Mester dominated the second and third periods, winning by major decision, 10-2.
Mester's victory gave CMU a 9-3 lead, but Michigan would score 21 straight points to take the lead for good. Michigan's run began when CMU forfeited at 149, tying the dual at nine. Returning national champion and top-ranked Ryan Bertin of Michigan battled 11th-ranked Ty Morgan at 157. Bertin used a solid second period to earn the victory, 9-4. Michigan earned its first fall of the dual at 165 when 16th-ranked Pat Owen caught David Bolyard after an intense scramble a minute into the match, scoring the fall in 1:14.
CMU got back on the board at 174 with a 2-0 victory by Mitch Hancock over R.J. Boudro. CMU's momentum was short lived as Michigan sealed the dual victory at 184 with a fall by Joshua Weitzel in 2:15. Weitzel wrestled Russ Vanderheyden and the two were scoreless when they got into an furious scramble where both wrestlers were on their back, but Weitzel ended the scramble on top, earning the pin.
CMU's Joe Yager battled 17th-ranked Chase Verdoorn at 197. Yager used four takedowns to earn the victory by major decision, 10-2. Michigan Greg Wagner, ranked sixth, used a late takedown and a riding-time point to defeat Bill Stouffer in the final match in the dual, 5-2.
CMU took on No.2 Lehigh in its second dual of the day. A match-up between 13th-ranked Mario Stuart and 19th-ranked Kyle Stoffer began the dual. Stuart got an early takedown in the match and used that two points to earn the victory, 4-2. Seventh-ranked Jordan Webster took on 20th-ranked Matt Ciasulli. Webster took an early lead with a reversal in the second period, and used that for a 4-2 victory after the two traded reversals in the third period.
The match at 141 was another battle between ranked wrestlers, CMU's Jason Mester, ranked fourth, and Cory Cooperman, ranked 10th. Mester used three takedowns to defeat Cooperman, 7-4. CMU again forfeited the 149 pound weight class, making the score 9-6 Lehigh. At 157, eighth-ranked Derek Zinck used a six-point first period to earn a major decision, 15-4.
David Bolyard took on top-ranked Troy Letters at 165. The two battled to a scoreless tie at the end of the first. Letters got on the board first with an escape in the second period and took that 1-0 lead into the third period. Bolyard started the second period with a quick reversal, taking a 2-1 lead, with a Letters' escape tying the score at two. The match remained tied until 25 seconds into overtime when Letter's earned a takedown for the victory, 4-2.
Third-ranked Brad Dillon of Lehigh and 19th-ranked Mitch Hancock battled at 174. Dillon got a first period takedown for an early lead and added another takedown later in the first for a 4-2 lead heading into the second period. Dillon's lead held up as he was a 7-4 victor. At 184, CMU's Russ Vanderheyden took on seventh-ranked Travis Frick. Frick took the lead with a takedown 20 seconds into the first period. Vanderheyden got a quick escape, making the score 2-1. Frick extended his lead to four with a takedown at the end of the first and an escape to begin the second. Frick maintianed that lead to earn a 7-3 victory.
Alex Lammers took on 20th-ranked Matt Cassidy at 197. With the score tied at three, Cassidy got an escape with one second left to earn the victory, 4-3. The dual ended with Bill Stouffer defeating Paul Weibel, 8-4.
CMU will return to action on Dec. 2 when it opens its home schedule against Michigan State. The Tuesday night dual will begin at 7:30 p.m.
