EAST LANSING - The Central Michigan University wrestling team got its season off to a solid start with 15 of its wrestlers placing in the Michigan State Open this weekend. Along with the 15 wrestlers who placed, CMU had one champion and 10 wrestlers finish in the top four of their weight class.
The tournament featured many of the top Big Ten and Mid-American Conference teams. Some of the top teams who participated were No. 5 Michigan, No. 7 Ohio State, No. 19 Wisconsin, and No. 24 Michigan State. The three teams picked to finish second through fourth in the MAC coaches' poll, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Kent State, also competed in the tournament.
CMU's 15 placers were the most of any team at the tournament. Michigan had the second-most with seven, while Michigan State had six, Wisconsin and Northwestern had five and Ohio State had four. In comparison to the other MAC teams at the tournament, the three other squads had a combined 10 placers with only two wrestlers finishing in the top four.
David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) wrestled unattached and won the 165-pound weight class. In the finals, he defeated 10th-ranked Pat Owen of Michigan in overtime, 4-2, and in the semifinals, he beat fourth-ranked Johnny Clark of Ohio State in overtime, 3-1. He finished the tournament 5-0. Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis/Sr.), ranked fourth in the nation, fell to third-ranked Scott Moore of Virginia in the finals at 141, 6-4. He went 4-1 in the tournament.
Taking third in the tournament were: Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So.) at 125; Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.) at 133; Kevin Carr (Warsaw, Ind./Sr) at 165; and Joe Yager (Fulton/Sr.) at 197. The five other Chippewas who placed were: Matt McCartney (Roseville/So.) fifth at 184; Brad Anderson (Grand Rapids/Jr.) sixth at 165; Nate Edwards (Port Huron/So.) seventh at 165. True freshmen Wynn Michalak (Caro) and Brandon Carter (Swartz Creek) both wrestled unattached with Michalak taking seventh at 184, and Carter taking eighth at 141.
Stoffer, ranked 17th, fell in his first match of the day to Mark Moos, who won the tournament. Stoffer bounced back to defeat sixth-ranked Tom Clum of Wisconsin in the consolation semifinals, 3-1, and beat John Velez of Northwestern in the third-place match, 2-1. He went 5-1 in the tournament.
Webster, ranked 12th, fell in overtime to former Michigan All-American A.J Grant in the championship semifinals, 3-1. He moved on to the third-place match with a victory over ninth-ranked Ed Gutnik of Wisconsin, 8-3, and in the third-place match, Webster defeated teammate Jason Borrelli, 1-0.
Another match of note for Webster was a meeting between the last two MAC champions at 133, Webster and Sam Hiatt of Northern Illinois, with Webster picking up the victory in double overtime, 5-4. This was the first competition for Webster in almost 18 month after sitting out last season with an injury. He went 5-1 in the tournament.
