MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University women's basketball team could not overcome a sluggish start here on Tuesday night as Detroit escaped Rose Arena with a 63-45 victory.
Poor shooting plagued the Chippewas (2-5) as the home team only hit on 24.4 percent of its shots for the game. The defensive minded Titans held the Chippewas to just 11-for-45 shooting from the floor.
Lindsay Mecoli led the Chippewas with 18 points. Casey Manning was the next highest Chippewa scorer with eight. Lindsey Pasquinzo led the Titan offense with 11 points.
UDM's Sara Crum had a game-high nine rebounds as Detroit held the narrow edge on the boards, 38-37.
The Titans (3-3) took advantage of a listless Chippewa offense and built a 14-3 lead with 7:20 left in the first. It took the Maroon and Gold nearly six minutes to post its first field goal. However, the home team rallied, posting 15 points in the final seven minutes and entered the break down seven, 25-18.
But, the seven-point deficit was insurmountable for the Chippewas as the Titans hit on 47.6 percent of their shots in the second stanza. UDM was able to stretch its lead to 22 points in the second stanza and rode it out for the 18-point win.
CMU returns to the hardwood when it takes a two-game road swing through Texas this weekend. The Chippewas battle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday, Dec. 19, and play at Texas Pan Am on Sunday, Dec. 21. The next home date is on Sunday, Dec. 28, when CMU plays host to Colgate. Tipoff in Rose Arena is set for 2 p.m.
NOTES: CMU freshman Morgan Wills knocked down her first career three-pointer ... the seven-point deficit at the half marked only the second time this season that CMU trailed at the end of the first 20 minutes ... Lindsay Mecoli tied a season high with 18 points.
