MOUNT PLEASANT -- Senior center Amanda Elwer scored a career-high 26 points here Sunday afternoon in powering the Central Michigan University women's basketball team to a thrilling 69-64 come-from-behind win over Colgate University.
Elwer scored 26 points and plucked down 10 rebounds for the Chippewas in the non-league battle. Her previous career best was 18 against Eastern Michigan in 2002.
The win upped CMU's record to 4-6 while the Raiders dropped to 6-3.
The Chippewas trailed for much of the game but rallied midway in the second half to take their first lead since the 15:28 mark at 61-59 on a driving layup by Casey Manning. CMU never relinquished the lead after gaining it.
Colgate led by as many as 14 points in the first half (28-14) with 8:47 to go before settling for a 40-32 lead at the break. The Raiders were up by as many as 13 in the second half at 51-38 with 16:11 remaining.
A three-pointer by Lindsay Mecoli put the Chippewas up by a 66-62 margin with 1:21 to play. Lindy Hatfield then split a pair of free throws before Elwer iced it with 10 seconds left with two more foul shots.
Elwer, a 6-1 product of Delphos, Ohio, had plenty of support with three more players in double digits including Manning with a double-double of her own. The 5-9 sophomore had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Also in twin figures for the Chippewas were Mecoli with 16 points, four of them three-pointers, and Hatfield with 10.
Malissa Burke topped Colgate with 16 points while Emily Braseth and Molly Patterson chipped in with 11 each.
CMU meshed 23-of-61 from the field for 37.7 percent compared to Colgate's 35.7 percent on 25-of-70. The Chippewas did hold a 48-44 edge in rebounding and matched the Raiders with only 11 turnovers.
CMU will return to action on Tuesday with a road game at IUPUI at 7 p.m.
