CMU Wrestling Sits in Third After Day One of Midlands

EVANSTON, ILL - - Eight members of the Central Michigan University wrestling team (2-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) advanced to the second day of competition at the Midlands on Monday, January 29.
The Chippewas sit in third-place after the first day of competition with 55 points. There was a mistake with the team standings after Monday's session. These are the correct team standings.
The tournament is one of the top individual tournaments in the nation with many of the top teams in the nation competing in the tournament. It is being held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Sr.), ranked third in the nation, advanced to the championship semifinals at 141 with a victory over Anthony Coleman of Cleveland State, 6-0. He will face fourth-ranked Cliff Moore of Iowa in the semifinals tomorrow morning.
David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.), seeded second, also advanced to the championship semifinals with a decision over No. 7-seed Joe Mazzurco (Cornell), 5-2. Bolyard, ranked fourth in the nation, will face No. 3-seed Nick Passalano of Iowa in the semifinals.
Winning in the third-round of consolation to advance to tomorrow and the consolation fourth-round were: Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So) at 125; Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill/Sr.) at 133; Ty Morgan (Huber Heights, Ohio/Sr.) at 157; Matt McCartney (Roseville/So.) at 184; Joe Yager (Fulton/Sr.) at 197; and Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.) at 285.
CMU sat in fifth-place after the first session and was the only school to have all 10 of its point-scoring wrestlers still alive heading into the second session.
Two CMU wrestlers won their championship second round match to advance to the quarterfinals. They were: Jason Mester over DeWitt Driscoll of Penn State, 3-2, and David Bolyard by technical fall over Frank Beasley of Lincoln College, 15-0 in 4:08.
CMU wrestlers went 13-3 in the championship first round and pigtails. Picking up important victories in the round were Mitch Hancock, Andy Keller and Alex Lammers. Hancock defeated Tyler Baier of Cornell, seeded ninth, in triple overtime, 3-1. Keller defeated Ryan Derr of Ohio State in the pigtail round, 2-0 in overtime, and Lammers pinned MAC-placer Ed Magrys of Eastern Michigan 1:08 in the first period.
The second day of competition is set to begin at noon CST tomorrow, Dec. 30. The championship semifinals, consolations and seventh place match will take place during the noon session. The second session, which will include the first, third and fifth-place matches, is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. CST.
