Wrestling Defeats Northern Illinois, 25-10

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University wrestling team (7-4; 1-0 Mid-American Conference) defeated MAC-rival Northern Illinois Friday evening in Rose Arena, 25-10.
Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So.) got the Chippewas off to a solid start at 125 with a major decision victory over Dave Aranda, 9-1. Stoffer, ranked 15th, used an early takedown to take control of the match and then earned the major with two more takedowns late. The match at 133 was between two national-ranked wrestlers as 10th-ranked Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.) of CMU took on 13th-ranked Sam Hiatt. Webster took an early lead with a first period takedown. The two wrestlers traded escapes before Hiatt got a reversal in the early part of the third period to try the match at three, but Webster quickly escaped and held on for the one-point victory, 4-3.
Third-ranked Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Sr.) extended CMU's lead to 10 with a victory over Andy Hiatt, 8-3. Mester got a takedown midway through the first period and then rode Hiatt out the rest of the period for a 2-0 lead. Mester added an escape and a takedown in the second and a takedown in third to earn the victory. The Huskies got on the board with a win by 17th-ranked Josh Wooten over Adam Cunningham (Maple Ridge/Fr.), 7-5. The match was back and forth throughout with Cunningham taking the early lead with a takedown, but Wooten came back to win the match with a takedown late the third period.
The Huskies battled back to within three points in the team score at 157 with a major decision victory by Joe Henning over back-up Adam Hopkins (Greenville/Jr.), 14-4. CMU regained a double-digit lead with wins at 165 and 174. Sixth-ranked David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) of CMU defeated Alex Nelson at 165, 9-5. Bolyard dominated most of the match, scoring three takedowns and only giving one up late in the match when he was working for the major decision. CMU's lead moved to 12 when Northern Illinois forfeit at 174 to Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Jr.).
The match at 184 was a battle throughout as second-ranked Ben Heizer edges out a one-point victory over Alex Lammers (Huber Heights, Ohio/Jr.), 1-0. The lone points in the match came when Heizer escaped in the early part of the second period.
CMU wrapped up the team victory at 197 as seventh-ranked Joe Yager (Fulton/Sr.) defeated Greg Readon in overtime, 4-2. Yager scored the lone takedown of the match midway through the overtime period tp score the win. The dual wrapped up at heavyweight as CMU's 12th-ranked Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.) scored a victory over Joe Sapp, 6-1. Stouffer used a reversal in the second period and three nearfall points in the third to earn the victory.
The Chippewas continue conference action in their next dual, as they will travel to Ypsilanti to battle Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 2. The dual take place in Bowen Field House and will begin at 2 p.m.
