EVANSTON, ILL - Two members of the Central Michigan University wrestling team (2-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) won titles at the Midlands in Evanston, Ill., on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Both 141-pounder Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Sr.) and 165-pounder David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) won their weight class, the first time CMU has ever had two champions in the same year at this prestigious tournament. In fact, this was the first-time that CMU has had two wrestlers in the finals.
The Chippewas ended up finishing sixth in the tournament with 79 points. This is CMU's best finish in this tournament since it finished third in 1998. CMU's two champions were tied for the most of any school along with Iowa State. Illinois won the tournament with 107.5 points.
In the finals at 141, Jason Mester took on No. 4-seed Nate Gallick of Iowa State. Gallick took an early lead with a first period takedown. Mester began the second period on top, and quickly worked for the nearfall points. Gallick injured his ankle as Mester worked to turn him, and was unable to continue after trying to wrestle on the injured ankle. That gave Mester the victory by injury forfeit and CMU's first Midland's champion since 1998 when Casey Cunningham won a title.
David Bolyard battled No. 4-seed Ralph Everett of Hofstra in the finals at 165. The match ended regulation tied at one with each wrestler scoring an escape. The match went scoreless in the first overtime period, sending it to a second. In the second overtime, Bolyard got an escape in the first 30-second period, and then held Everett down during the second 30-second period for a 2-1 victory.
The first session of wrestling on day two produced a first for CMU wrestling as for the first-time in CMU history, two Chippewas advanced to the finals. Both Jason Mester at 141 and David Bolyard at 165 won their championship semifinal match to advance to the finals.
Mester battled Iowa's Cliff Moore, seeded third, in the semifinals. It was a low scoring affair as the match sat tied at one with a minute to go in the match. Mester got the lone takedown of the match with 40 seconds to go and held on for the one-point victory and his first trip to the Midland finals, 3-1.
Bolyard, seed second, took on No. 3-seed Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the semifinals. Bolyard got a takedown midway through the first period and added another takedown in the second as he earned the victory, 5-3.
The consolation fourth round was not as good to the Chippewas as the championship semifinals was as only one CMU wrestler won his match in that round.
Heavyweight Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.) was the only CMU wrestler to win his consolation fourth round match to advance to the consolation quarterfinals and a guaranteed place in the tournament. Stouffer won his match by medical default over No. 3-seed Mitch Clark of the Ohio International.
Stouffer battled second-seeded Pat Cummins of Penn State in the consolation quarterfinals. The match was tied at one when Cummins scored a takedown with 15 seconds to go in the match to earn a 3-1 victory. In his seventh-place match, Stouffer lost to No. 11-seed Mike Behnke of Illinois, 5-1, to finish eighth in the tournament.
The Chippewas return to action on Saturday, January 10, when they head to Ashland, Ohio to compete in the Wendy's Classic. CMU will battle VMI, Gardner-Webb, and Pittsburgh that day.
