Eastern Michigan Cruises Past Chippewas, 59-47

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University women's basketball team held Eastern Michigan to 59 points but couldn't get its offense going as it fell to EMU this afternoon, 59-47.
The Chippewas slip to 10-12 on the season and are now 4-7 in Mid-American Conference play. Eastern, on the other hand, improves to 9-13 overall and 6-5 in the MAC.
CMU could not rebound from its cold start, going 0-for-11 from the floor in the first six minutes of the game. The Chippewas got their first field goal at the 13:40 mark of the first half. Eastern Michigan was able to build a miniscule five-point lead in the opening five minutes but it was a lead that the Eagles would never relinquish for the remainder of the game.
The buckets would not fall for the home team, as it shot 21 percent (6-for-28) from the floor in the first half, .255 (14-for-55) for the game. It allowed EMU to extend its five-point lead to nine with 4:44 left in the first stanza. CMU connected on only one three-point attempt in the first half, going 1-for-8 from behind the arc.
Eastern Michigan finished the half with a nine-point margin of favor, 24-15.
A 14-5 surge in the first six minutes of the second half allowed EMU to open up an 18-point lead over the Chippewas. The Eagle lead stretched to as much as 20 with 12:37 left but CMU slowly tried to chisel it away. The Eagles' lead hovered around the 15-point range for seven minutes, but the Maroon and Gold cut to 10 with 1:08 left. However, Eastern Michigan was able to keep CMU at bay and finish with the 12-point victory.
The swift-shooting Eagles shot 54.1 percent (20-for-37) for the game and outrebounded the Chippewas, 37-28.
Laurie Henderson led CMU with a 12-point afternoon. Lindsay Mecoli finished with nine and Desiree Eidson tallied eight. Pacing the Eagles was Abby Wiseman. She came off the bench to score 17 points. The sensational frosh, Nikki Knapp, had 13, and Ryan Coleman added a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Chippewas will return to the road when they will play at Miami on Wednesday, February 19. Tipoff in Millett Hall is set for 7 p.m.
