Wrestling Crushes Competition at Wendy's Classic

ASHLAND, OHIO - The Central Michigan University wrestling team (5-2; 0-0 Mid-American Conference) went 3-0 in the Wendy's Classic in Ashland, Ohio, on Sunday, Jan. 11.
The Chippewas defeated No. 25 Pittsburgh, 31-3, VMI, 46-0, and Gardner-Webb, 48-3.
Nine CMU wrestlers went undefeated in two or more matches on the day. Going 3-0 were: Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So.) at 125; Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Sr.) at 141; Ty Morgan (Huber Heights, Ohio/Sr.) at 157; Joe Yager (Fulton/Sr.) at 197; and Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.) at 285. Going 2-0 were: Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.) at 133; David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) at 165; Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Jr.) at 174; and Alex Lammers (Huber Heights, Ohio/Jr.) at 184.
CMU's toughest battle came in its final dual of the day as the Chippewas Pittsburgh, 31-3. The dual began at 125 with a match-up between ranked wrestlers as CMU's Kyle Stoffer, ranked 17th, took on No. 12 Drew Headlee. Stoffer used a first period takedown to get the lead and he led the rest of the match, earning a 5-1 victory. CMU extended its lead to nine with 1-0 victories by Jordan Webster at 133 and Jason Mester at 141, who defeated No. 17 Ron Tarquino.
After Pittsburgh got on the board with a win at 149, CMU responded with wins at 157 and 165. At 157, Ty Morgan got a takedown in triple overtime to defeat Justin Nestor, 3-1. David Bolyard put on a takedown clinic at 165, scoring six takedowns as he earned the major decision over Keith Gavin, 15-6. Mitch Hancock stretched CMU's lead to 16 with a victory at 174 over Francis Iorfino, 3-0.and Alex Lammers locked up the team victory with a win at 184, 3-1. CMU wrapped up the dual with wins by Joe Yager at 197 and Bill Stouffer at heavyweight with a pin.
CMU picked up its second win of the day with a victory over Gardner-Webb, 48-3. Four Chippewas made their first appearance this season in the starting line-up, with three winning by pin and one winning by major decision. The four wrestlers were: Craig Shutich (Rockford/So.) at 133 winning by major decision, 10-1; Brad Anderson (Grand Rapids/Jr.) at 165 winning by pin in 54 seconds; Kevin Carr (Warsaw, Ind./Sr.) at 174 winning by a pin at 5:17; and Alex Lammers (Huber Heights, Ohio/Jr.) at 184 winning by pin in 4:20.
In CMU's first dual of the day, the Chippewas shut out VMI, 46-0. CMU scored three pins and two technical falls in the victory. Adam Cunningham saw his first action in the CMU starting line-up and made the most of it, earning a pin with one second left in his match. Also getting pins were Kyle Stoffer, with a figure-four lock at 2:46, and Jason Mester, with a cradle at 4:20. The technical falls were scored by David Bolyard, who scored 11 nearfall points in the match, and Mitch Hancock, who scored a takedown with two seconds left to reach the 15-point advantage.
