CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Central Michigan University wrestling team (6-4; 0-0 Mid-American Conference) went 1-2 at the National Duals on Saturday, Jan. 17, in Cleveland, Ohio.

The National Duals brings together 16 of the top wrestling team in the nation to crown the unofficial "dual-meet national champion." The NCAA championships awards the team championship based on the points that the team's individuals score in the tournament.
The second round of consolation was a match-up with the Sooners of Oklahoma. The Sooners jumped out to an early lead by winning three of the first four matches to take a 12-point lead. The Sooners' fast start began with a victory at 125 with a victory by Sam Hazwinkle over Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Fr.), 12-5. CMU's Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.) tied the team score at 133 with a come-from-behind, overtime victory over Mimi Miller, 10-8. Miller took an early lead with a takedown in the first period and held that lead until about 10 second remaining in the match when Webster got a takedown to tie the match. Webster then scored a takedown 20 seconds into overtime to earn the victory.
The marquee match-up of the dual was at 141, where CMU's Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis/Sr.), ranked third, took on top-ranked Teyon Ware. Mester and Ware met in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships last season, with Ware winning in double overtime. Mester took the early lead with a takedown on the edge of the mat. Ware tied the score when he scored a reversal midway through the period and Mester regained the lead with a quick escape. A Ware takedown and a Mester escape made the score tied at five entering the last minute of the match. With about 15 seconds remaining in the match, Ware scored a takedown off a Mester shot, giving him the victory, 7-5.
Oklahoma's Jeff Eckloff used three early takedowns to roll to a major decision victory at 149 over Adam Cunningham, 12-4. The match entered the last minute with the score tied at one when Crump was awarded a point because Stouffer received this second stalling call. That call gave Crump all the lead he would need, winning the match and clinching the dual, 2-1.
In the first round of consolations, CMU battled a familiar foe as it took on Michigan State. The two teams met earlier this season in Mount Pleasant as CMU defeated the Spartans, 19-15, in a dual that went down to the final match. Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So.) got CMU off to a solid start with a victory over Craig Trombly, 3-1. Jordan Webster extended CMU's lead to six with a victory over Craig Greathouse, 4-1. The match-up at 141 was a classic as CMU's Jason Mester, ranked third, battled Andy Simmons, ranked ninth. The match went scoreless through two and a half periods before Mester was able to get three nearfall points to earn the victory, 3-0.

After a scoreless first period, Noto earned an escape to begin the second and was awarded a penalty point near the end of the period when Stoffer received this second stalling warning, giving Noto a 2-0 lead. Stoffer began the second period on bottom and quickly escape to get within one. With about 50 seconds left in the match, Stoffer got the only takedown to take a one-point lead and then rode Noto out the rest of the match for the 3-2 victory.
At 133, it was another match-up between ranked wrestlers as CMU's Jordan Webster, ranked 13th, took on Ricky LaForge, ranked ninth. This two meet at the Midlands with LaForge winning the match and knocking Webster out of the tournament by fall at 5:40. The first period went scoreless, with LaForge taking bottom to begin the second. Webster rode the Hofstra for a majority of the period and gained the riding-time advantage before gaining an escape and a 1-0 lead. Webster quickly countered with the lone takedown of the match and a one-point lead at the end of the period. Webster choose neutral to begin the third and the period went scoreless, giving Webster a victory and some revenge with a 3-1 victory.

Hofstra fought back with five consecutive victories to take a five-point lead in the team score. Hofstra's Paul Siemon defeated Ty Morgan, 4-1, at 157 to get the Pride on the board. At 165, it was a rematch from the Midlands finals as CMU's David Bolyard, ranked fifth, took on sixth-ranked Ralph Everett. In the first match between the two, Bolyard won in double overtime, 2-1, to take the Midlands title. As with the first time they met, the match went down to the last moments as Everett was awarded a stalling-point and gained a takedown in the last 10 seconds for a 4-1 victory.
Hofstra continued its comeback with Noel Thompson's double overtime victory over Mitch Hancock. Thompson, ranked 10th, was awarded a point in the first part of double overtime when Hancock was penalized for locked hands. Thompson then rode Hancock out the whole 30 seconds of the second part of double overtime to earn the victory, 5-4. Hofstra's Brad Christie avenged a Midlands loss to Alex Lammers at 184. Christie scored a takedown with eight seconds left to win the match and pull the Pride within one point in the team score. Hofstra all but locked up victory at 197 as third-ranked Chris Skretkowicz got a victory by fall over Joe Yager. Skretkowicz held a five-point lead entering the final seconds of the second period when he was about to put Yager on his back and earn the pin with four seconds left in the period. Heavyweight Bill Stouffer ended Hofstra's run with a victory over Dan Garay, 9-2, but it was too little, too late as the Pride used the Skretowicz's pin to earn the team victory, 18-16.
The Chippewas begin conference action in their next dual. CMU will host Northern Illinois on Friday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m. The Huskies broke CMU's 24 MAC-dual winning streak last season and also earned a share of the MAC regular season championship along with CMU and Kent State.
