Wrestling Dominates at MSU Open

EAST LANSING- Different year, same results.
The Central Michigan University wrestling team put together another dominating performance at the Michigan State Open that wrapped up Sunday afternoon.
The Chippewas had three champions, 10 medallists (top 3) and 17 wrestlers place in the top eight. Those numbers were easily the best in a tournament which included Michigan State, Ohio State, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Northern Illinois and Kent State.
The three champions were freshman Luke Smith (125 pounds), seniors Mitch Hancock (174) and senior Bill Stouffer (285). Three others finish second: junior Kyle Stoffer (133), freshman Eric Neil (157) and freshman Wynn Michalak (197).
The third place finishers were junior Mark Disalvo (149), freshman Christian Sinnott (184), senior Alex Lammers (197) and freshman Bubba Gritter (285). Freshmen Brandon Carter (141) and Brandon Sinnott (174) took fifth while Russ Vanderheyden (184) finished sixth-place. True freshman Matt Steintrager (125) notched seventh-place with fellow true freshmen Louis Socier (184) and Vince DiDona (174) taking eighth.
Smith defeated 11th-ranked Drew Opfer of Kent State in the 125-pound final. Smith tallied a pair of three-point nearfalls to secure a 8-5 victory. Hancock, ranked eighth, used a late takedown for a 5-4 victory over R.J. Boudro of host-Michigan State. The eighth-ranked Stouffer recorded a two-point nearfall early in his finals match against Dustin Fox of Northwestern, tallying a 4-2 victory.
The Chippewas return to action at the Northern Iowa Open on Saturday, Dec. 4.
Notes:
CMU's All-American David Bolyard will compete in the Marines/ National Wrestling Coaches Association All-State Classic on Monday evening. Bolyard, ranked second, will face top-ranked and returning national champion Troy Letters of Lehigh. The classic is being held at SIU-Edwardsville beginning at 7 p.m.
