Chippewa Women Defeat Akron, 70-65

AKRON, Ohio - The Central Michigan University women's basketball team needed overtime but the Chippewas finally recorded their first Mid-American Conference win of the season with a 70-65 victory over the University of Akron here Wednesday night.
The game was deadlocked at 57-57 at the end of regulation after CMU held a 23-22 edge at the half. However, the Chippewas wrapped it up in the overtime session thanks to Casey Manning's six points.
A three-pointer by Lindy Hatfield tied the game at 61-61 and Manning's three-point play put CMU ahead for good at 64-61 with 2:12 remaining. Lindsay Mecoli later scored a jumper to make it 66-63 followed by two more free throws by Manning, and then solo free throws by Erin Kuhl and Manning.
The win upped the CMU record to 5-18 for the season and 1-11 in MAC competition. Akron falls to 7-16 and 2-10.
Hatfield, nailing five-of-eight from three-point land, led the Chippewas with 19 points followed by Kuhl with 15 and Manning 12. Game-high honors went to the Zips' Jae Conn with 22.
CMU held a 37-34 edge in rebounding behind Amanda Elwer's game-high nine caroms. The Chippewas finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field on 23-of-56, nailing eight-of-20 from behind the three-point line. UA hit on 21-of-57 for 36.8 percent and was an incredible 19-of-20 from the free throw line.
CMU looks for its second straight triumph at home on Saturday when it faces Miami University in a MAC clash at 1 p.m. The Chippewa men meet Evansville in the second game of the doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
