Chipewa Women Fall in Overtime, 81-77

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University's women's basketball team came within a whisker of pulling a major upset here Saturday afternoon before dropping an 81-77 overtime decision to Miami University.
The Chippewas led by nine points at 69-60 with 1:13 remaining in regulation when the RedHawks drilled three straight three-pointers for force an extra session tied at 69-69.
After trailing by as many as five points in overtime, CMU took the lead at 77-76 with 45 seconds to play on a pair of free throws by Ann Skufca. However, Nicole Motto meshed her seventh three-pointer of the game to put the RedHawks ahead for good at 79-77.
The win upped Miami's record to 12-1 in MAC play and 18-6 overall while the Chippewas are now 5-19 for the season and 1-12 in conference play.
A pair of freshmen powered CMU with career performances. Ann Skufca poured in 14 points and collected a career-high 15 rebounds while Sharonda Hurd fired in a career-best 17 points. The Chippewas had three more players in double digits - 14 by Erin Kuhl, 11 by Lindy Hatfield and 10 by Lindsay Mecoli.
Colleen Day, who scored the first seven points of overtime before fouling out, and Motto led Miami with 21 points each followed by Kim Lancaster with 16.
CMU posted its second-best shooting effort of the year, hitting 28-of-53 for 52.8 percent. MU was at 45.1 on 32-of-71.
The Chippewas also held a 42-32 edge in rebounding but too many turnovers was their undoing. CMU had 28 miscues to 16 for Miami.
CMU will try to regroup for a road tilt at Western Michigan on Tuesday, Feb. 24, before playing at Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 28.
