MUNCIE, Indiana - The Chippewa offense was blanked for the third time this season when Ball State shut out the Central Michigan University field hockey team, 6-0, on Saturday.
After yesterday's 2-1 overtime victory at Miami, the Chippewas were looking to win back-to-back contests for the first time since September 24-25 when they beat Missouri State twice.
BSU improves to 3-11, 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference while CMU drops to 7-10, 4-4 in the MAC.
CMU head coach Cristy Freese believes BSU played with a greater effort in the match.
"Ball State played a lot tougher than we did," Freese said. "(The Cardinals) executed their plays very well."
BSU tallied its first goal in the 17th minute when Lindsay Quay scored off a penalty corner. Maggie Durbin and Carla Chiampi recorded assists on the play.
It was just 1-0 at the break but Ball State added five goals in the second half. In the 37th minute, Quay netted her second goal past CMU goalkeeper Danielle Frank on a Lauren Cruz pass.
Katie Kloeckener scored her first career goal from Quay in the 44th minute. Then Chantelle Isaac-Smith recorded her first of two goals in the match six minutes later. Next Quay tallied a goal from Tara Reed in the 60th minute. The final Cardinal goal came unassisted off a rebound when Isaac-Smith netted her second goal of the game, her 10th of the season.
Cardinal keeper Tracy Bannister recorded the shutout with seven saves, earning her second shutout of the season. Frank stopped five shots in the loss, and CMU back Kim Ferris made a defensive save.
BSU edged CMU in shots (17 to 16), but both teams tied with seven penalty corners each.
The Chippewas conclude the regular season by hosting Kent State and MAC-leading Ohio next weekend. CMU battles KSU on Friday, October 28, at 2 p.m. The Miami match is set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
