KENT, Ohio - A four-point match by Erica Takach could not keep Central Michigan University field hockey from coming out on the wrong end of a 5-3 loss at Kent State on Friday afternoon.
The Chippewas fall to 6-6 on the year, 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The victory is the first this season for KSU as it improves to 1-11, 1-2 in the MAC.
Samantha Sandham opened the scoring in the fifth minute with her fourth goal of the year with Takach tallying her first of two assists on the day. The match remained 1-0 until the 23rd minute when Kent State evened the score with a goal by Mel Bierns De Haan.
The Golden Flashes wasted little time taking their first lead of the match as Elizabeth Lahey scored alittle over two minutes later. It only took 45 seconds for Alisa Folk to tie the match with her sixth of the season as Takach assisted on the goal.
Kent State retook the lead before intermission with Bierns De Haan scoring her second goal of the match in the 32nd minute to give Kent State a 3-2 lead heading into half time.
The scored remained 3-2 until the 66th minute when Britt Van Pelt gave KSU a two-goal cushion with her first goal of the year only to score just two minutes later to make the score 5-2. Takach got her goal in the final minute off a penalty corner with Kim Ferris assisting on the goal.
Linz Markwart made three saves to earn the victory while CMU keeper Danielle Frank stopped seven shots in the loss.
The Golden Flashes outshot CMU, 22-13, and tallied nine penalty corners compared to seven for the Chippewas.
CMU returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a match at Ohio beginning at 1 p.m.
