Women's Basketball Routs Wilberforce, 86-39

MOUNT PLEASANT - A 17-2 run to open the game gave Central Michigan University women's basketball a lead it would never relinquish in an 86-39 rout of Wilberforce at home on Saturday afternoon.
The contest was the season opener for CMU while the Bulldogs fall to 0-4 on the year.
The victory was never in doubt for the Chippewas as they never trailed and held a 39-13 lead at halftime. CMU's defense continued its strong play, limiting Wilberforce to just a .237 marl from the floor and forcing 25 turnovers. The Chippewas tallied 16 steals and had five blocks in the victory while also grabbing 17 more rebounds, 53-36.
Sharonda Hurd led the Chippewa offense with a career outing. She racked up a career-best 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting. She also hit a career-high four three-pointers and led CMU with seven boards, five on the offensive end.
CMU's Ann Skufca put together a perfect shooting night, going 5-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the line. Along with her 14 points, she also added five rebounds and a block. Chasidy Myers was the other Chippewa to finish in double-figures as she tallied 10 points on the night.
Kanisha Coward had 15 points to lead Wilberforce with Shamarah Thomas adding 11 points.
The Chippewas had a strong night from beyond the arc, hitting 10-of-21 attempts (.476), while overall the Chippewas shot .419 (31-of-74) from the floor and .778 (14-of-18) from the free throw line.
CMU hits the road for its next contest. The Chippewas travel to Chicago, Ill., on Tuesday for a game with Illinois-Chicago. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST.
