CHICAGO, Ill. -- Four Chippewa starters scored in double figures as the Central Michigan University women's basketball team held on for a 67-62 road win at Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday evening in the UIC Pavilion.
CMU (2-0) led by 18 points, 56-38, with 11:33 left in the game, but the Flames (1-2) went on a 17-2 run over a 7:27 stretch to trim it to a three-point contest with just over four minutes remaining. The Chippewas were scoreless for nearly six minutes while UIC made its run and the Flames' final seven points during the spree were all free throws.
Guard Erin Kuhl ended CMU's drought with an off-balance layup with 3:08 remaining and it was tightly contested after that.
UIC's Krystal Hugelier hit a jumper with 11 seconds left that made it a one possession game at 63-60. However, the Flames were forced to foul and the Chippewas went 4-for-5 from the line after that to seal the win with Chasidy Myers going 3-for-3.
The win snapped a string of nine straight road losses with CMU's last win coming Dec. 20, 2004 at Saint Louis.
Myers finished with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Ann Skufca posted a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 12 boards.
Casey Manning tallied 15 points and Sharonda Hurd 12 in the winning effort.
Neither team shot well from the floor with both teams coming in just under 40 percent. CMU hit at a .387 clip going 24-for-62 and Illinois-Chicago shot .397 going 23-for-58. The low percentages meant a lot of rebounds and the Chippewas won the battle of the boards, 49-32, with 15 of CMU's caroms coming on the offensive glass.
Three UIC players were in twin figures with Chrissy Dizon just missing a double-double with 14 points and nine boards. Hugelier, the Flames' leading scorer entering the game at 19 points per contest, was held to just seven by the Chippewa defense.
CMU won despite turning the ball over nearly twice as many times as the Flames, 20-11.
Next up for the Chippewas is a home game on Saturday, Nov. 26, against IPFW at 2 p.m.
