KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A cold shooting night by the Central Michigan University women's basketball team gave Western Michigan the advantage it needed in a 58-50 victory on Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo.
The Broncos improve to 4-8 on the year and 1-0 in the Mid-American while CMU drops to 9-3, 0-1 in the MAC.
The Chippewas were 17-of-66 (.258) from the field while WMU finished just a tick better with a .325 (17-for-52) mark. Three-point shooting was key as the Broncos hit 6-of-16 (.375) while CMU was just 3-of-16 (.188). Western Michigan also got to the line seven more times, tallying five more free throws.
Rebounding, especially on the offensive end, helped CMU stay in the game as it out rebounded Western Michigan, 52-34. On the offensive end, the Chippewas tallied 23 boards compared to eight by WMU.
Ann Skufca led CMU with 11 points and tied for the team-high in rebounds with seven. Sharonda Hurd was the other CMU player in double-figures as she had 10 tallies. Erin Kuhl and Casey Manning both matched Skufca's rebounding total with seven a piece.
Amanda Parker tallied a season-high 15 points to lead the Broncos including three three-pointers. Casey Rost added 10 tallies while Carrie Moore also had 10 points to go along with her game-high 10 rebounds.
The Chippewas held a 15-11 lead when WMU went on a decisive 18-3 run in the final 7:33 of the half, resulting in a 29-18 halftime deficit for CMU. CMU was just 1-of-9 during WMU's run while Western hit 6-of-12 during that span including three triples.
The 18 first half points was the lowest output by the Chippewas in a half this season as they shot just 22.6 percent from the field in the first. In comparison, WMU shot 42.3 percent including 4-of-7 from three-point range.
CMU opened the second half with a 6-0 run to close within five at 29-24. Western's lead would bounce between five and nine points over the next 12 minutes before the Chippewas made another surge to get within three at the 5:37 mark, 43-40.
That is when WMU's Casey Rost took over, scoring eight-straight points for the Broncos. That gave Western Michigan a 51-40 advantage with 3:30 remaining. CMU did get within six with 25 second remaining but ran out of time.
The Chippewas open the home portion of their MAC schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they host Northern Illinois. Tip off in Rose Arena is set for 7 p.m.
