FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Central Michigan University had a pair of athletes compete against the best from across the country in their respective events on Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Indoor Track.
On the men's side, senior Pierre Vinson fell just short of qualifying for tomorrow night's final in the 60m dash. Vinson ran a 6.72 in the first of two preliminary heats this evening, missing the last qualifying spot for the final by three hundredths of a second. His time placed him 10th among the 16 competitors in the 60m event.
Vinson may still earn All-America honors, despite missing out on qualifying for the final. All-America honors are extended to the top eight American citizens, even beyond those who qualify for an event final if fewer than eight American citizens do so. A final determination of those eligible for All-America honors will be made following the conclusion of the 60m finals tomorrow night. In 2005, CMU teammate Clarence Glenn finished ninth in his preliminary of the 60m hurdles, but earned All-America honors by virtue of being the seventh-fastest American in the event. Vinson was an All-American last year after taking fifth in the 60m final.
On the women's side, senior Tamera Thomas finished 15th of 18 competitors in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.27 in the first of three preliminary heats. She failed to qualify for the finals. The final qualifier was Kellie Wells of Hampton, who ran an 8.16 in her preliminary heat.
Thomas' weekend isn't over yet as she will compete tomorrow in the pentathlon, a multi-event with five elements - the 60m hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 800m run. The first of the five events, the 60m hurdles, will begin at 11:30 a.m. CST tomorrow and conclude with the 800m later in the day.
Also tomorrow, senior Dave Stallworth will be in action in the weight throw competition. Stallworth and the other 15 competitors in the event will be in action at Walker Pavilion beginning at 2 p.m. CST.
