TOLEDO, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships got underway today at the University of Toledo Track and Field Complex with first day events in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon competitions, along with four women's and three men's events.
On the men's side, Central Michigan University sits in third place after three events with 19 team points. CMU had point scorers in all three events, led by Jeff Powers earning eight points with his second place finish in the 10,000m with a time of 30:40.76. Three Chippewas had scoring finishes in the hammer throw: Dave Stallworth took fourth (five points) with a mark of 184-11; John Pilling placed sixth (three points) with a heave of 175-7; and brother Greg Pilling came in eighth (one point) with an effort of 168-10. John added two more points for CMU with his seventh-place finish in the javelin throw (175-0).
The CMU women's team totaled only two points among the four events contested on the opening day of competition. Freshman Jackie Rivard was CMU's lone scorer, finishing seventh in the 10,000m with a time of 36:55.62. Two Chippewas finished just out of scoring position in ninth place, as both Jena Amell in the pole vault (10-11 3/4) and Allison Jakubowski (117-1) barely missed denting the scoring column. CMU is in 12th place after day one.
Action at the MAC Outdoor Championships resumes tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with second-day events in both the decathlon and heptathlon. Day two action will also feature semifinal heats for the sprint and middle distance events along with a few field event competitions.
