MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Caelyn Hartley went coast-to-coast and beat Central Michigan goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds two minutes into overtime Saturday as Ohio handed the Chippewas a 3-2 Mid-American Conference field hockey loss.
It was CMU's first league loss and it dropped the Chippewas into second place, one-half game behind Kent State. CMU is 6-10 overall, 4-1 league.
Kent is 4-0 in the conference after a victory over Ball State on Saturday. The Flashes are scheduled to play Longwood in a league game on Sunday, and close the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1, at CMU. Ohio is 4-9, 3-2.
The Bobcats seized a 2-0 lead on goals by Adele Sammons and Elena Curley. CMU drew within one at halftime when Cayleigh Immelman scored at the 33-minute, 10-second mark.
Immelman's second goal of the game, about eight minutes in to the second half, tied it at 2-2. Kaysie Gregory and Kianne Hinkle each had an assist for CMU. Immelman leads the Chippewas with eight goals.
"I give my team a lot of extra credit," CMU coach Cristy Freese said. "We're down 2-0 in a very important game. We fought our way back again."
The Chippewas held possession most of the second half, outshooting the Bobcats, 4-1, and holding a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners over the final 35 minutes the result of a halftime strategy adjustment. CMU finished with 10 penalty corners to the Bobcats' four.
"We took away what was their strength, which is their penalty corners," Freese said. "We made a couple of adjustments and I thought we did a better job."
Reynolds had five saves. The Bobcats outshot CMU, 12-7.
CMU travels to Michigan State on Sunday to play a non-league game.
