MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Before the Central Michigan women's basketball team settles in for what could be a fantastic ride in 2014-15, there is first the business of securing part of its future.
On Wednesday, coach Sue Guevara unveiled her 2015 recruiting class, signing four players - all from the state of Michigan -- to letters of intent.
"They all have a pretty high basketball IQ," the eighth-year CMU coach said. "I like that. Two of them are 4.0 (grade point) and another is a 3.6.
"They're basketball savvy. They're the kind of kids who spend a lot of their own time in the gym. That tells you a lot."
The class comprises Aaliah Hill of Flint, Presley Hudson of Wayland, Reyna Frost of Reese, and Gabrielle Bird of South Lyon. Hill, Frost and Bird are all listed at 6-foot, while Hudson is a 5-foot-6 guard.
"Three of them played on the same AAU team together so they know each other very, very well and they've played against each other," Guevara said. "And I like the versatility that they all bring to the table, especially with the type of offense that we run."
Bird, who has several family members who are CMU alums, averaged 18.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game last season at South Lyon East High School. She led the Kensington Lakes Athletic Association in scoring and was second in rebounding.
Hudson averaged 16.7 points and 5.8 assists per game in 2013-14 at Wayland High School.
Hill earned First Team All-State honors a year ago at Hamady High School, and she chose CMU over several Division I schools, including Western Michigan, Toledo, Oakland and Detroit Mercy.
Frost averaged 15.9 points, 11.6 rebounds and 4.3 steals last season at Reese High School. She chose to join the Chippewas over Western Michigan, Princeton and Bucknell, among others.
All four student-athletes have played on the varsity at their respective schools since their freshman seasons, and all count myriad All-State and individual regional and league honors.
"I think they're all very, very competitive and they've won a lot," Guevara said. "I think we've got really good rebounding with Frost and Hill, and three-point shooters with Bird and Presley. Frost can also hit the three."
Guevara said the quartet comes from the mold she covets - competitive, driven and, obviously, talented.
In the past six years, CMU has averaged 18-plus wins per season, won a Mid-American Conference Tournament title, captured a MAC West crown, and made three post-season appearances.
"They will all fit in with the competitive nature of this program and our style of play," Guevara said, adding that next year, the Chippewa roster will include 10 underclassmen. "They want the bar high because they want to jump over it. This class will keep me coaching for a long time.
"They're all Michigan kids. I think we've made a firm commitment since I've been here to get some of the best Michigan kids and we've been able to do that."
