MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan women's basketball will head for Chicago this week aiming to build upon an impressive 3-0 start.
The Chippewas will square of with non-conference Loyola Chicago (1-2) on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and Illinois-Chicago (3-1) on Friday (4 p.m.).
Loyola, which was picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference, finished 6-25 last season. UIC was fifth a year ago in the Horizon League, when it finished 16-14.
Coach Sue Guevara's young CMU team has shattered expectations in the early stages of the season, particularly offensively.
The Chippewas have tallied wins against Indiana State, Oakland and Middle Tennessee State, defeating each by 20 or more points.
The Chippewas lead the Mid-American Conference in nearly every offensive category and are ranked 11th nationally, averaging 92 points per game.
Freshman phenom Presley Hudson has led the way averaging a team-best 21.7 points per game. That number ties her for 28th in the nation.
The Chippewas have also received a spark from sophomore forward Tinara Moore. Moore is second on the team in scoring, 15.6 points per game, and is the Chippewas' leading rebounder at 9.0 per. She scored 24 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and made a CMU-record-tying seven blocks in leading the Chippewas past Middle Tennesse State a week ago. Her point and block totals were career-highs.
Da'Jourie Turner (12.3 points per game) and Jasmine Harris (10.7) are also averaging in double figures. Turner and Hudson share the team lead with 5.0 assists per game, while Jewel Cotton, who averages 9.3 points per game, is second on the team with 7.3 rebounds per.
Hudson is second in the MAC in scoring behind Baleigh Reid (22.0) of Miami (Ohio), while she and Turner are among three players tied for third in the conference in assists per game.
Moore is first in the conference with a .625 field goal percentage and she is tied for second with 2.3 blocks and third in rebounds per game.
CMU returns home on Thursday, Dec. 3 to take on Duquesne in a non-league game at 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
