MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Sometimes in the game of basketball, no matter what you do, the basketball just won't find the bottom of the net.
This was case Thursday as the Central Michigan women fell to Duquesne, 68-49, in a non-leaguer at McGuirk Arena. The 49 points was CMU's season-low. The Chippewas entered the game averaging 81.4 points per game.
"It was just a struggle all night, we struggled to score, period," CMU coach Sue Guevara said. "We got abused down low, Duquesne did a nice job of going in on us. It was a tough night overall.
"A cog came out of the wheel today but the wheel is sill going. It's the sixth game, I'm not going to panic and I still have a lot of confidence in this team," Guevara said.
It was the second straight loss for the Chippewas (4-2). Duquesne (6-1) has won five straight.
The Chippewas, who shot a season-low 29.7 percent from the floor, trailed 33-31 at halftime, but were outscored 16-6 in the third quarter as Duquesne pulled away.
The Chippewas finished 2-for-18 from 3-point range on the night. They were 1-for-13 from beyond the arc in the second half.
"I'm concerned that our 3-point shooters are wide open and they're not hitting them," Guevara said. "We do enough shooting drills. For us to shoot (so poorly) in the second half, it's unbelievable."
The Chippewas out rebounded the Dukes, 49-42.
Freshman Guard Presley Hudson led CMU with 12 points, going 5-for-11 from the field. Junior forward Jewel Cotton had 10 points to go along with eight rebounds. Tinara Moore also had eight rebounds.
After scoring 10 points in the first half, Hudson attempted just two shots in the second half.
"Every time Presley Hudson touches the ball I want her to shoot it and she was wide open and she was deferring," said Guevara.
Kadri-Ann Lass led Duquesne with 16 points and went 3-7 from long range. The Chippewas held the Dukes' leading scorer, April Robinson, to seven points on 3-of-13 shooting, but she finished with 10 assists.
Three other Dukes -- Deva'Nyar Workman (15 points), Amadea Szamosi (15) and Emille Gronas (11) - finished in double figures.
The Chippewas will have nine days off and will pick up competition Dec. 12, going on the road to face Big Ten opponent Illinois (4-1).
