SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Central Michigan women's basketball team completed a perfect 2-0 performance in the Cal Poly Tournament with a 77-55 victory over North Dakota State on Saturday.
Tinara Moore, Reyna Frost and Presley Hudson each recorded a double-double and Hudson tied the CMU single-game assist record with 12 as the Chippewas won their third straight game and improved to 5-2.
CMU returns to McGuirk Arena on Thursday for a nonleague matchup with Loyola Chicago (noon).
"The goal when we came out here was to try and be better than we were," said CMU coach Sue Guevara, who led the Chippewas to a 71-62 win over Utah Valley on Friday. "(Friday) wasn't pretty, but we were better than when we played Oakland (on Tuesday) and today we played much better than we played yesterday.
"It's a really good confidence booster for us as we get ready to go play against Loyola next week."
Moore came off the bench to lead the Chippewas with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, her first double-double of the season in her first non-starting appearance. She made 10 of her 17 field goal attempts and added three blocks.
"Tinara Moore answered the bell today," Guevara said. "She came off the bench and asserted herself, she ran the floor and she has a double-double. That's a totally different player than what we saw yesterday."
Frost, a sophomore forward, notched her first double-double of the season as well, finishing with a season-high 18 points and 15 boards.
Hudson finished with 12 assists, tying the Chippwea single-game mark set by Brandie Baker against North Carolina A&T in the 2010-11 season. She also had 11 points, as did Jewel Cotton.
Hudson's assist total also ties for the sixth most in an NCAA Division I game this season. She committed just two turnovers.
The Chippewas finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range. The Bison finished at 33.3 percent and 36 percent respectively. CMU held a 43-33 rebounding advantage.
CMU never trailed, and its lead reached double digits, 14-4, before the game was five minutes old. North Dakota State managed to trim its deficit to two points early in the second quarter, but CMU restored its lead to 10, 35-25, by halftime. The Chippewa lead reached 20 points early in the third quarter, and the Bison never seriously threatened after that.
Taylor Thunstedt scored 15 points to lead North Dakota State.
