BIMINI, Bahamas â€" Presley Hudson and Cassie Breen combined for 45 points as the Central Michigan women's basketball team topped Iowa State, 81-60, to capture the Junkanoo Jam on Saturday.
It was the fourth straight win for the Chippewas (4-1), who opened the Jam with an 85-76 win over San Diego State on Friday. CMU is scheduled to return home on Thursday (7 p.m.) for a nonconference game with Aquinas (5-3).
Hudson made all five of her 3-point attempts and all six of her free throw tries in scoring a game-high 23 points to lead the Chippewas. She earned the tournament Most Valuable Player Award.
Tinara Moore finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Chippewas, marking her second consecutive double-double. Moore had a combined 42 points and 30 rebounds â€" both team highs â€" in the Chippewas' two games in the Jam. She was named a tournament All-Star.
Breen made six of her 12 3-point attempts and finished with 22 points. The Chippewas finished with 14 triples in 24 attempts.
"We're talking about facing two respectful teams," CMU coach Sue Guevara said. "The amount of scorers we have make us tough to defend. I'm thankful to Central Michigan for allowing our team to get out here and experience this."
The Chippewas trailed by nine points, 13-4, less than four minutes into the game, but the Chippewas responded with a 21-9 run to close the first quarter, after which they led 25-21.
The Chippewas led by nine, 42-33, at halftime and bumped their advantage to double digits, 47-37, on a Moore jumper with 6:49 remaining in the third quarter.
CMU's lead never dipped below 10 points after that, and reached a high of 24 in the fourth quarter.
"I am so happy and proud of our team," Guevara said. "Iowa State came out and punched us early and we responded big. We got running and were able to hit some shots."
In going 5-for-5 from 3-point range, Hudson became the fourth Chippewa in program history to finish perfect from beyond the arc (minimum four attempts). Sally Sedlar went 5-for-5 in a 1998 game against Toledo, and Kerby Tamm and NIki DiGuilio both went 4-for-4 during games in 2014, Tamm against Toledo and DiGuilio against Ohio.
