SETTING THE SCENE
• The CMU gymnastics team entertains Illinois State on Sunday in a nonconference dual.
BACK HOME
• CMU is coming off a second-place finish in the four-team Metroplex Challenge in Forth Worth, Texas.
• The Chippewas, who went into the Challenge ranked 37th, finished behind 18th-ranked - and unbeaten - George Washington. CMU finished ahead of Bowling Green and San Jose State.
• The highlight of the meet for the Chippewas came in vault, on which they finished first with a season-best 48.850. Of the four events, CMU was ranked lowest nationally (50th) on vault heading into the meet.
RANKINGS
• The Chippewas are tied for 38th (with Towson) in the NCAA team rankings this week. They are the third Mid-American Conference team in the rankings. Eastern Michigan is 29th and Kent State is 31st.
• National event rankings: CMU, 45th vault; 45th bars; 36th beam; 30th floor; Illinois State, 55th vault; 50th bars; 56th beam; 60th floor.
• Individually, CMU junior Katy Clements is the highest-ranked Chippewa, tied for 28th on beam.
IN THE CARDS
• Illinois State opened the season by finishing first in a quad meet with Temple, Centenary and Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Cardinals have lost their last two meets, the first to Bowling Green, the second to Illinois-Chicago.
• Illinois State's highest-ranked gymnast is Meredith LaRoche, who is 161st nationally on beam.
NEXT FOR CMU
• The Chippewas return to Mid-American Conference competition on Sunday, Feb. 12 when they go to Ball State (1 p.m.).
