Chippewas take on Appalachian State in tourney opener
OXFORD, Ohio -- The Central Michigan field hockey team will open Mid-American Conference Tournament play against Appalachian State on Wednesday (noon) at Miami University Field Hockey Field.
Â
The Chippewas are the seventh seed, while the Mountaineers are the sixth seed. Appalachian State defeated CMU, 5-1, on Oct. 12 in Boon, N.C.
Â
Under the tournament format, the CMU-Appalachian State winner is scheduled to take on third-seeded Longwood in a tournament semifinal game on Thursday, Nov. 1 (1:30 p.m.). MAC regular-season champion Miami is the No. 1 seed and the defending tournament champion.
Â
WHERE THEY STAND
The Chippewas defeated Ball State, 1-0, in their regular-season finale on Oct. 19. CMU is 2-15 and finished 1-5 MAC. The Mountaineers are 5-13, 1-5 after dropping their regular-season finale to Bucknell, 3-2, on Sunday.
Â
RIDING THE MOMENTUM
CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said the Chippewas were happy with the victory, which snapped a 12-game losing streak, but now the focus is entirely on Appalachian State and advancing in the tournament.
Â
"We acknowledged the win, and we used the win as momentum, but there's still work to be done," Ostoich said. "The win helped everyone in spirit, but we also recognize that the win won't help us win our next game. We can take the good and the bad from that game and look to improve on Wednesday."
Â
KEYS
Ostoich said the Chippewas have learned from their loss at Appalachian State and have crafted a game plan with that in mind. CMU trailed, 1-0, at halftime and were within 3-1 with under 10 minutes to play.
Â
"We have found some different ways to break their press (defense), which is something we struggled with the last time around," she said. "We also worked on ways we can press them differently, so we can come up with the ball above the 25 (-yard line) and take advantage of our opportunities. That game slipped away from us, but it was within our grasp in the half."
