MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan field hockey team will travel to Kent, Ohio to play in a Mid-American Conference game with Kent State at the Golden Flashes' Murphy-Mellis Field on Sunday (11 a.m.).
Â
The Chippewas come into the game 1-12, 0-3 MAC, with a home loss to the Miami (Ohio) last Friday. The Golden Flashes are 3-9, 1-1 and are coming off a double-overtime league victory over Longwood 3-2 last Sunday. CMU lost to Longwood 3-0 back on Sept. 15.
Â
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
Previously, the top four finishers in the MAC standings advanced to the league tournament. All seven league members will now receive a tourney bid.
Â
The Chippewas are tied for sixth place with Appalachian State in the seven-team MAC. CMU's final three league games are against schools, Kent State, Appalachian State and Ball State, which enter this weekend at .500 or below in conference play.
Â
PREP TIME
With nine days since their last game, the Chippewas have had plenty of time to prepare for Kent State. CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said they have taken full advantage of that time.
Â
"We've been really able to break down some technical skills and tactical skills," Ostoich said. "With the long week of practice, we've been able to do more individual drills than we're able to do (in the past) and then put it together in practice with the whole team."
Â
SPECIFICS
Ostoich said one of her points of emphasis with her players has been shooting on key, creating opportunities and capitalizing on them.
Â
"When we get into the attacking 25 (yard line), the result has to be either a (penalty) corner or a shot on goal," she said. "That's the only way we will be scoring is if we get those shots on goal. We have been up in opposing teams' attacking 25 in the past couple of games, but we haven't been able to register any points from it.
Â
"Another big point for us is just being diligent on defense. We have to not give up as many defensive corners. Lastly is possession. If we keep possession of the ball, we will be better off in the long run."
Â
NEXT
The Chippewas go to Boone, N.C. to play against Appalachian State on Friday, Oct. 12 (6 p.m.), and then to Davidson for a nonleague game on Sunday, Oct. 14 (noon). Davidson is 4-6.
