KENT, Ohio – Kent State outshot Central Michigan, 20-6, on Sunday in handing the Chippewas a 5-1 loss in a Mid-American Conference field hockey game at the Golden Flashes' Murphy-Mellis Field.
Â
The loss dropped CMU to 1-13, 0-4 MAC. Kent State is 4-9, 2-1.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hailie Balachick scored two goals to lead Kent State, which led 2-0 at halftime. The Golden Flashes' lead grew to 5-0 when CMU sophomore Alli Huddleson scored her first goal of the season. Georgina Minta and Kady Gurtis each drew an assist on the goal.
Â
Abigail Ebersole and Lily Amadio split time in goal for CMU. Each recorded four saves.
Â
CMU COACH CATHERINE OSTOICH
"We came out very stagnant. We didn't move a lot and we kind of let Kent walk all over us. I think our biggest issue was that we could not possess the ball. We let them draw a lot of corners that I don't think they were necessarily great corners, but we couldn't stop play. I definitely think we could have done more (on offense) which is the frustrating part. It was great to draw those corners, but we've got to execute those corners.
Â
"We just couldn't make things happen in that attacking end. Once we cross that attacking end, we have to show that we were up there and get on the board some way, either by a shot or a corner or drawing a foul.
Â
"We just have to keep moving forward. We cannot be stagnant, and I think that's why we struggled to get up the field because we were standing around a lot instead of cutting for our teammates. Once we started to cut for our teammates, we were, all of a sudden, drawing corners and taking shots. We've got to be moving for the full 70 minutes and we've got to look to keep possession."
Â
NEXT
The Chippewas play two games on the road next weekend. They go to Appalachian State on Friday, Oct. 12, for a MAC game, and then play at Davidson in a nonleaguer on Sunday, Oct. 14.
