CMU beats Chattanooga to capture tourney crown
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Presley Hudson scored 22 points as the Central Michigan women's basketball team rolled past Chattanooga, 73-50, on Sunday in the Chippewas' second and final game of the Virginia Cavalier Classic.
The Chippewas, who beat the host Cavaliers, 74-61, on Saturday, won the tournament with a 2-0 record.
"It was nice to get out of here with two wins and (Sunday) was especially good because I was able to play everybody and they all contributed in some way or another and I got to rest the starters for a little bit," CMU coach Sue Guevara said.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for CMU, which improved to 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas never trailed, building a 19-9 lead after one quarter. They increased their lead to 18, 41-23, at halftime and were never seriously threatened in the final two quarters. CMU's largest lead was 32 points, which came late in the third quarter.
"I'm grateful that we were able to get our freshman and our sophomores some playing time because they need to play in games like this so that they're seasoned by the time we open (league play) with Akron," Guevara said.
LEADERS
Micaela Kelly added 16 points for CMU, while Kyra Bussell had 14 and Reyna Frost finished with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Chippewas outrebounded the Mocs, 44-33.
BIG GAME FOR BUS
The 14 points was a career high for Bussell, a sophomore forward and one of CMU's top reserves. Her seven rebounds was a season high. She went 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
"You saw her attacking the basket, she got to the free throw line and she really went after the ball, pursued the ball," Guevara said. "It was nice to see her have a breakout game."
STRONG DEFENSE
Chattanooga's 50 points was a season low for a CMU opponent. The Mocs (4-3) entered the game averaging 62.2 points per game.
Lakelyn Bouldin scored 10 points to lead Chattanooga.
