CMU continues late-season surge
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – One weekend, two matches, two wins, and a major step for the Central Michigan volleyball program.
The Chippewas downed Toledo, 25-23, 25-13, 25-23, in a Mid-American Conference match on Saturday at McGuirk Arena. It was CMU's second three-set sweep of a MAC foe in as many days.
The Chippewas, who have won four of their last five matches after losing their first nine in the MAC, improved to 7-19, 4-10 MAC. Toledo is 9-16, 4-10.
"Tonight was a great night for our team," CMU assistant coach Krista Rice said. "I felt like we were really composed when we got down in the third set, and it shows our growth from four weeks ago to today."
WHERE THEY STAND
At 4-10 in league play, the Chippewas are tied for ninth in the overall MAC standings with Toledo and Western Michigan. The top eight teams in the final standings make the league tournament.
Kent State, which is 6-8 in conference play, is eighth.
The Chippewas play their final two regular-season matches next week at Northern Illinois and at Western Michigan.
SENIOR SENDOFF
Saturday's match was the last in McGuirk Arena for CMU seniors Emily Wenglikowski and Marissa Grant.
"You could tell it was a humbling moment for both Emily and Marissa, that this was their final home match as a Chippewa," Rice said.
Grant finished with three kills, while Wenglikowski contributed 13 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas took a tight opening set, and capitalized on their momentum with a dominant performance in set two, taking the second stanza by 12 points.
It was CMU's largest point margin in a winning set this season.
The Chippewas fell behind, 7-1, in the third set, then scratched their way back to a 13-13 tie. The Chippewas closed the set on a 7-5 run.
LEADERS
Freshman outside hitter Savannah Thompson finished with team highs in kills (12), hitting percentage (.333) and digs (17) to lead CMU.
While her ability to kill the ball is one of the best on the team, Rice praised the freshman's defensive abilities.
"She does a good job, especially the last two nights, of being more disciplined defensively," Rice said.
Setters Grace Butler and Kendall Braate combined for 36 assists.
