CMU gymnastics 30th in preseason poll
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team is ranked 30th in the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Preseason Poll.
The Chippewas won the Mid-American Conference Championships last season, won the league regular-season title, and qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 10th consecutive season and 15th time overall.
CMU is the lone MAC team among the top 36. League brethren Kent State, Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan are among the teams receiving votes in the poll. Defending national champion UCLA is first.
"We're used to high expectations and we set our goals very high, every year," longtime Chippewa coach Jerry Reighard said. "We're certainly honored to be mentioned among the best in the nation, but we know that it's just the preseason and we have a lot of work ahead of us and a long way to go."
The Chippewas are scheduled to open the season on Sunday, Jan. 6 at home with a quad featuring Illinois and Arizona along with Bridgeport. Illinois is ranked 22nd and Arizona is ranked 33rd.
Two future CMU opponents are also ranked: No. 10 Kentucky and No. 13 Denver. The Chippewas go to Denver on Jan. 19 and visit Kentucky on March 8.
