CMU finished rugged nonconference slate with a statement road win
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A double-double from Reyna Frost. The cool, calm poise of Presley Hudson. Timely buckets and defense from just about everybody else.
And another win over a ranked team by the Central Michigan women's basketball team.
Frost had 25 points and 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season and Hudson added 23 points as the Chippewas knocked off 24th-ranked Miami (Fla.), 90-80, on Sunday at the Miami Holiday Classic.
It marked CMU's first win over a ranked team since the 2018 NCAA Tournament, when they topped No. 10 Ohio State and No. 24 LSU in back-to-back games.
And it was yet another feather in the cap for CMU coach Sue Guevara and her program, one of the nation's top mid-majors as it finishes a tough-as-nails nonconference schedule at 9-3. Included in that slate were four victories over teams that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, and a four-point loss to third-ranked Louisville.
CMU begins defense of its Mid-American Conference championship on Saturday, Jan. 5 (1 p.m.) at home against Akron.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas never backed down from the 24th-ranked Hurricanes who entered the game unbeaten on their home court this season.
CMU led by as many as 11 points, 50-39, in the first half. Miami drew to within three, 82-79, with 33 seconds to play.
But the Chippewas put their poise on display and never blinked. Hudson made seven of her eight free throw attempts in the final 32 seconds to ice it, while both Watters and Frost came up with critical steals.
BOUNCING BACK
The Chippewas opened the Classic on Saturday with a 68-57 loss to Tulane. CMU made just six of its 30 3-point attempts against the Green Wave.
CMU hit 16 triples, tying its season high, against the Hurricanes (12-3. The 16 3-pointers (on 30 attempts) ties for the second most in program history.
"In this game you have to have a short memory because we're playing the No. 24 team in the country," Guevara said. "We battled the whole weekend, both games, and today we were able to come out with the win.
"The shots were going in (against Miami). Yesterday was our first game after the Christmas break and we were really rusty. Our kids came back, give them all the credit because they came in with a great deal of confidence and the shots that we missed yesterday, went in today."
INSPIRATION
Guevara said she drew inspiration, and passed it along to her players, from a pre-game text message she received from CMU President Dr. Robert Davies.
"He talked about courage," Guevara said. "If you have a poor performance, and we did (against Tulane) shooting the ball, you have to be courageous to come out and have a really good performance, and we did."
LEADERS
Frost scored 19 of her points in the first half and finished with a career-high four 3-pointers. The 6-foot senior from Reese, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday against Tulane, earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Micaela Kelly finished with 18 points and Maddy Watters added 14 for the Chippewas.
Beatrice Mompremier scored 22 points to lead the Hurricanes.
